Carpet Weaving

Carpet weaving is a very tedious and laborious process. It takes several months to weave a hand-made carpet. A carpet is made up of several knots and stitches which require huge craftsmanship and detailing skills. Several knots are tied at each square inch in order to obtain the required design and pattern. Carpet weaving requires intricate detailing and hence a lot of time to weave a single piece. Depending upon the type of weaving technique used, carpets are classified.

Woven carpets are one of the highly demanded and resilient types of carpets. The process of producing woven carpets is very much similar to that of weaving cloth or fabric. These are produced on loom with colorful yarns, which give them a vibrant look. Due to their beautiful colors and striking patterns, woven carpets are very popular among people. These involve intricate weaving which slows down the manufacturing process. This is one of the reasons that woven carpets are so expensive.

The process of making hand-knotted carpets is very laborious. These are developed as a nomadic craft and are popularly known as Persian carpets. Originally, knotted carpets were made up of goat and sheep wool, but nowadays many other fabrics and yarns are also used in manufacturing process. The best quality knotted carpets are judged by their knot density. The more the amount of knots per square inch, better the superiority of a hand-knotted piece.

Tufted carpets are manufactured by a tufting machine, unlike woven and knotted ones which are crafted by hand. But these tufted pieces depict as much beauty and colors as a hand-woven one illustrates. An assortment of tufted pieces includes tufted woolen carpets, nylon, polyester, acrylic and polypropylene tufted carpets. These are usually produced in a single color and then dying & printing process is carried out separately. These are given an additional pile backing, which ensure their strength and hence long-lasting.

Needle felt
These type of carpets are made up of synthetic fibers like nylon and are of technologically advanced-type. The process of manufacturing Needle felt carpets involves electrostatic attraction of individual fibers, which gives additional strength to them. Due to their sturdy and robust production, these Needle felt carpets are highly demanded and used in hotels, offices, resorts and shopping malls, etc., where footfall rate remains high.

Flat weave
Flat weave carpets do not involve knots and have a flat surface, hence the name. Mainly woolen material is used for producing these, but cotton and other acrylic material can also be used. Geometrical and floral patterns are made using several colors, which give an exquisite look to these pieces. Some of the popularly known Flat weave forms available in market include Kilim, Soumak, Brocade and plain Flat weave carpets.

Other popular forms include hooked, Berber, pile weave, braided, Saxony, frieze and velvet carpets. The embroidery, patterns and colors used in the carpets signify the dedication and craftsmanship of the artisans making it. While handmade carpets depict enormous beauty, on the other hand machine-made ones exhibit durability and resilience. One can choose from this wide variety of carpets as according to his or her budget and requirement.
