The Top 5 Surprising Facts About Carpet

If you are thinking of installing new carpet in your home, you may have some hesitations. There are many false beliefs that people have about carpet and I hope to clear up some of those beliefs with the facts below.

Your carpet alone will not grow mold. Without food or water, your carpet will not grow mold on its own. This is a common misconception as mold can often be found on carpeting. However, any mold that you find on your carpet was most likely generated by moisture in the wood below or from food. For example, you might find a large amount of mold on the carpet if you have a leak.

Carpet alone does not stimulate your allergies. In fact, the opposite might be true. It actually has the ability to absorb allergens and keep them from traveling through the air. Another common misconception is that cleaning them will trigger an allergy attack. While it is true that certain chemicals will be harmful when it comes to your allergies, picking the right cleaner or consulting with cleaning professionals will help you avoid that stuffy nose.

It should be cleaned more often than you think. Many people think that if carpets looks clean, they is clean. Carpet does not only collect dirt. There are all kinds of harmful particles that hide within it. In addition, there may be soil that you cannot see that is doing more damage than your realize. Little dirt particles have the ability to ruin the fiber coating of your carpet. In fact, these particles accumulate on a daily basis so you might want to think about getting the vacuum out!

It has the power to reduce noise within your house. Carpeting will in fact reduce unwelcome noise within your home. It literally absorbs a room's sound as long as the carpet is laid out across the entire room.

It is not necessarily more expensive than hardwood floors. In certain cases, hardwood floors can be less expensive. However, the cost of maintaining your carpet can be much less than maintaining a hardwood floor. Hardwood floors require buffing, mopping, sweeping, etc. If you clean your carpet periodically and vacuum it regularly, it can end up costing you much less time and money in the end.

Not all carpets are made equal. It is important to learn how to choose the right one for your home. Hopefully some of these facts changed any misconceptions you had and helped you realize that carpeting is in fact a very wise flooring option.

5 Reasons Why Cork Flooring Is Perfect for the Kitchen

Cork flooring is one of the most sought after flooring materials today. Homeowners love to have different rooms in the house fitted with cork floors, especially the living room and bedroom. What many don't know is that cork floor tiles are also perfect for the kitchen. Many believe that this type of floor may not be able to withstand the rigors of a kitchen. After all, these places are high traffic places where food and drinks can be spilled on the floor, glasses and plates can fall and break into a million little pieces. However, contrary to their expectations, cork floors are actually one of the best choices for kitchen flooring and here are 5 reasons why.

1. Durability - Many people can't believe that a floor tile so soft can actually be durable - at least, durable enough to handle a kitchen. Here's one way to look at it. Cork has been trusted for centuries in the wine industry. It is has been used as wine bottle stoppers to preserve the contents. Without the right tools, it's almost impossible to remove that cork from the bottle and that's how durable cork floors are.

Cork came from the bark of the cork oak tree. Since it is essentially the bark itself, it was originally meant to protect the tree from the forces of nature. That, in itself, is a testament to the durability of cork.

2. Elasticity - Cork floors are elastic which is why they are soft to walk on. Inside the cork is a honeycomb structure that holds pockets of air. When compressed, the structure is responsible for returning the compressed area to its original state. That process of compression and decompression is what we feel.

It's not uncommon for glasses and plates to fall and break on the floor, especially on tiles or hardwood. However, cork flooring may actually provide a bit of cushion and prevent the glass or plates from breaking.

3. Water resistant - Kitchen flooring often experience water spills. Water may spill from a glass on a table, or from the kitchen sink, or even from dog water bowls. Fortunately, cork tiles are water resistant. In the first place, cork does not absorb water. Keep in mind that it is also used as a bottle stopper.

However, this does not mean that cork floors are waterproof. As long as the floor is wiped dry as soon as possible, then it is impossible for it do any damage to the floor.

4. Color & Design Variety - Cork flooring manufacturers produce tiles in over 200 different designs and colors. You will surely be able to select one that will complement your kitchen design.

5. Repairable - In the event that one or more tiles are damaged, these can easily be repaired. More often than not, the damage will be superficial thus affecting only the finishing of the tile. All that it will usually need is for the damaged finish to be sanded off. A new coat of varnish is then applied and the tile will look like new.
